Take The Lead For Walk To School Week

The sun is out and Brits are dashing to the gym in a bid to prepare their summer bodies for the holiday season ahead. With so many gym memberships and fitness classes available to us, it’s easy to forget about one everyday exercise that wont cost us a single penny… walking.

Walking is the most underrated form of exercise, yet it provides many health benefits for both people and pets. According to the NHS, regular walking has been known to reduce the risk of chronic illness, such as heart disease, asthma, stroke and type two diabetes.

The easiest way to start walking more is to make it a habit, and what better way to encourage a healthy lifestyle than to include your dog! With ‘Walk to School Week’ underway, we’re asking pet parents to ditch the car and enjoy some valuable time with both their children and their pooches by walking to school.

So why is it important to include our dogs? An overweight pet is not a healthy pet. In addition to an appropriate diet, regular walking is essential for keeping your pooch agile and limber. Proper exercise is also good for the digestive system, whilst discouraging destructive behaviour and helping to create a bond between pet and parent.

Any dedicated pet parent will tell you that dogs need to be walked every day, the duration of those walks is dependant on the size and breed of the dog. You’ll be able to judge if your dog has had a long enough walk when you get home – if they’re still energetic, then it’s best to put the lead back on!

Dogs also love to explore new locations, so try mixing it up once in while to discover new routes to school with your kids and take them with you on day trips over the weekends - just remember to take along water and a travel bowl so your dog can have a drink. You should also consider taking a toy with you to the park to keep energetic dogs entertained, such as the Throwbizz ball.

It’s important to remember that as much as you would love for your dog to run free around the park, it’s sometimes not a good idea. Many places will also require that dogs remain on their leads. Our popular Wag ‘n’ Walk Designer, Wag ‘n’ Walk Fashion and Luxury Leather collections boast a variety of matching collar and lead sets to keep your pooch looking stylish throughout the summer.

So, will you be walking your dog to school this week? We’d love to hear all about it! Join the conversation on Facebook or Twitter @RosewoodPet today.
